Our video library includes easy to follow instructional videos on how to remove the most common bathtub stoppers.
Some of the most common bathtub drain stopper types include:
Toe Touch Stopper - the toe-touch bathtub stopper simply pops up and down with a tap of your toe. It is really simple to remove a toe-touch stopper, all you should need is a flathead screwdriver. With the stopper in the open position, grab a hold of the top of it and turn counterclockwise while holding the shaft in place. If the shaft turns with it, continue to unscrew the stopper and the shaft should come right out.
*TIP - It is not necessary to remove the drain when replacing with the SimpliQuick® Tub Fix solution.
Lift and Turn or Push Pull Stopper - it’s easy to remove this type of stopper also with a flathead screwdriver. You’ll want to turn the knob counter-clockwise while holding the body of the stopper. If the knob will not turn, then you may need to wrap a rag around the knob and use pliers to loosen it. Once the knob is removed you can use a flathead screwdriver to unscrew the middle post threaded into the crossbar and pull the stopper out of the drain.
*TIP - If you are replacing a lift and turn stopper, it is also recommended that you replace with a push pull type of stopper such as the SimpliQuick® Tub Fix solution. With this revolutionary product there is no need to remove the tub drain.
Trip Lever Stopper - a pop-up stopper is controlled through a mechanism attached to the overflow plate, with the stopper visible in the drain without a strainer. It is still fairly simple to remove this type of stopper you just need to remove the screws from the faceplate and pull out the mechanism which is an attached rocker arm. Have a bucket handy to put the parts into so you don’t get the tub messy.
*TIP – we recommend replacing with a push pull stopper as the pop-up bathtub drain stopper type will often develop problems by not closing all the way and holding water.
Plunger Style - a plunger style of bathtub stopper is also controlled through a mechanism in the overflow faceplate, although the stopper is lowered directly into the bottom of the overflow drain. There is no need for a stopper on the top of the tub drain and most will have a strainer plate to cover the drain. You’ll need to remove the faceplate the same way as a pop-up stopper and pull out the mechanism.
*TIP - replace with a push pull stopper for easy install and functional drain cover with a stopper that provides a watertight seal.
